Shadowbox Inks (2015-16)
Each work began with a second-hand paper tole frame and a vintage photograph, many of which were from my personal collection of family and community photos.
First, an image inspired by the photograph was hand-painted in ink on the reverse side of the frame's glass. Next, pieces of nature, torn paper, cloth, thread, books, etc. were pieced together on the frame's backing to add texture and dimension.
The painted figures interact differently with their collaged backgrounds when viewed from multiple angles and under various light sources. Viewers used flashlights to explore these works when they were on display in duo/group shows in 2016.
