"Home, Home on the Brink", Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse, October 2020
Home, Home on the Brink is a collaborative body of work created with Rick Rogers during the Covid Pandemic summer of 2020.
We began the creation process by discussing how the pandemic had such a broad and deep impact on peoples' lives. We talked about the scarcity of clear choices while navigating new normals; about people being "out of their element"; about adapting to otherness imposed without warning; about the edges of being human. What are people willing to change or lose, to survive? And how gains in resilience can come at the price of a loss of natural habitat and habit/culture.
We talked about control. We discussed how distance can create otherness and lead to adversity.
We saw value in visually exploring these concepts together, and so we agreed to collaborate at each stage of the creative process as fully and as safely as we could. We took advantage of online tools like Pinterest and videoconferencing, and made many trips back and forth between our studios (mine in Edmonton, Rick’s in St. Albert) to swap canvasses.
